This market is only for studio potters: those who largely make their own pieces and not for those who engage in a commercial setup to make their work.

Conditions

· The display will have to be manned by you.

· There will be no sharing of space.

· No commercial collaborations. Displays of external brand other than your own handmade creations will be strictly prohibited.

· There will be no price limit. Works can be priced as you see appropriate.

· You can choose to participate in either one or both the weekends.

Plz. Note: we are only responsible for facilitating the space

We provide:
1. A table and a chair
2. An umbrella
3. General lighting

Overnight storage: a night guard to watch the tables overnight.
Work is left on the pavement at your own risk.

This does not apply for the weekdays in between weekends.

Rs 2000 per weekend, payable by cheque to Anjani Khanna, once we have confirmed your participation.

Turner Prize Winner and ceramic artist Grayson Perry's new show "The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman" opens at the British Museum, in London on October 6th 2011. According to the British Museum website "Grayson Perry curates an installation of his new works alongside objects made by unknown men and women throughout history from the British Museum’s collection" He says, "This is a memorial to all the anonymous craftsmen that over the centuries have fashioned the manmade wonders of the world…The craftsman’s anonymity I find especially resonant in an age of the celebrity artist."

An exhibition of ceramic sculpture by Yashashri Telkar and Swapnil opened at the Kamalnayan Bajaj Gallery in Mumbai on September 14th and is on view till September 20th, 2011.

Both artists are influenced by nature and Yashashri especially draws from marine life, particularly sea slugs and sea anemones. Yashashri studied at the J J School of Art and has been the head of the ceramics and pottery department at the L S Raheja School of Art since 2006.

In the summer of 2007, while training with Ray Meeker and Deborah Smith at the Golden Bridge Pottery, Pondicherry, Rashi was selected to work towards the first ever Anagama exhibition in India. Anagama is a Japanese term for a “cave kiln” - a single chamber, rising tunnel shaped wood-burning kiln. Wood ash settles on the pieces during firing to temperatures as high as 1400 degrees Celsius, and the complex interaction between flame, ash, and the minerals comprising the clay forms a natural ash glaze. Led by Peter Thompson, Australian artist in residence, the team built and fired the anagama kiln at Golden Bridge. The ‘Jar of Secrets’ is the crusty weathered result of the 3 day firing.

This exhibition is a development of the Jar of Secret series started in Pondicherry. Here Rashi explores the relationship between the inner and outer worlds: of understanding the self and the natural rhythm of the earth. The wheel thrown anagama fired Jar of Secrets is a contained form of her initial struggle, a striving towards perfection without and harmony within. The hand built sculptural forms with richness in colour, smoothness in texture are a re-exploration of the circular form. The apple symbolizing core abundance and yin energy, the pods and the sprouting seeds are infinite life forms in potential. The blooming lotus growing out of the mud alludes to purity, creation and expansion of the soul. Every grain of unfired earth, in the hand of the artist, is a seed waiting to burst forth.

The artist interweaves inner with outer through a video installation of the rare flowering of the Brahmakamal, which starts blooming at 8pm, reaches its peak at midnight and retreats back into itself, on the ‘Brahma Muharat’ at 4am. The bud is a symbol of creative energy. As the petals open, a star unfolds in perfect symmetry. As each curling tendril blossoms, it breathes out a burst of fragrance. The Brahmakamal heralds harmony, healing and inner light, and openness to experience. When the outward and the inward life have attained unity, then the uncertainties dissolve, all sense of separation disappears.

The trustees and staff of the Leach Pottery would like to express our great sadness at the recent catastrophe that has beset Japan. The Leach Pottery’s historic and current links to Japan are of great importance to us and the friendship we have received from the Japanese people over the years has been unwavering.

In 2008 the people of Mashiko pottery village and the Mingei Association collectively donated over £40,000 towards rebuilding the Leach Pottery.

We are launching an appeal now to raise funds for Mashiko which has been badly hit by the earthquake. Mashiko has over 400 studios and kilns, providing the main livelihood of the village, and the recent quake has caused considerable damage to kilns, homes and buildings. Mashiko’s two main museums, the Mashiko Ceramics Museum and the Hamada Reference Museum have also been badly hit. To donate to this appeal visit the Leach Pottery website

Adil Writer recalls Woodstoke 2002 with Soldner and others...

Summer of 2002. Penryn, California. At the studio of Rodney Mott. This was an ongoing series of wood-firing workshops which drew a good bunch of potters every year because of the big names associated with it. 2002 was the first year the legendary Peter Volkous would not be there..... having passed away sometime after Woodstoke 2001, into another realm. Soldner considered Volkous one of his “best friends”, hence there was a cloud of uncertainty how he would handle Peter’s absence.

The reputation of Soldner of course preceded him..... my first sighting of Soldner at Penryn was when a car arrived on top of the mound, above the workshop space and the several kilns at Mott’s property. The door opened and out came a livewire with a twinkle in his eyes, had a beaming smile, donning tasselled denim micro-mini shorts, with a couple of very young female beauties draped on either elbow. As he came closer, we noticed his toenails were painted an in-the-face pink! “Welcome to the world of Paul Soldner”, nudged a fellow participant.

There was never a dull moment at Woodstoke 2002..... the grandfatheresque presence of Rudy Autio making his large abstract forms, Tom Collins throwing his huge 10 feet high vases in meticulous sections, Rodney Mott, for all his tomfoolery (nothing to do with Tom Collins;-) making the strong sculptural works he is known for, .....and of course Soldner making us throw “bullets” on the wheel, stamping them with is rubber flip-flops and then combining them into the stunning pieces he is known for. On the side, he gave me a demo of his own way of making teabowls, shearing a thickly thrown lump of opened clay, joining it deftly, then re-throwing it into the teabowls that have their special Soldner-look..... much the same way as his genre of raku is called “American Raku”.

Whiffs of the legend at the workshop? He wanted only 1969 playboy magazine pages to load his pieces over in the kiln... “these beauties give the best (hymen-pink) pinky blush to my pots. No other printed material can do this for me”, he announced. It was quite bizarre..... seeing a kilnload of Soldner pots awaiting their tryst with a low-soda firing, nestled inbetween playboy bunnies in various states of undress! He did get his blushes, ....before and after the firing. Then there was the large tub of water in the greens above where he went (ok, most of us did too) skinny dipping for the daily wash, with a bevy of giggly girls from the workshop (we had no shower facilities there..... it was like a campsite). I could see how these moments sometimes found themselves on the funny, striking posters, usually featuring bodies of nude potters / participants, (including his own of course!) advertising his Soldner Pottery Equipment.

The workshop was charged. Soldner showed us how to make simple kilns, “no rocket science here”, happily ploughing through mushy fire clay with a bevy of beauties, as if they were doing a vine dance. I had painted one of Ton Collins’ tall vases with stains and Floyd lyrics.... to which Soldner passingly remarked, “this Indian boy has done a Pollock on Collins’ pot!”. For all the madness and hysteria during the firings of the three kilns, the workshop was extremely successful, in that there was seriously good work made here and I atleast, saw a different approach to claywork and firings. It was good to meet Andy, an assistant to Nader Khaleli in his fired-house structures. We exchanged notes because at that same time I was working with Ray Meeker of Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry on two fire-stabilized mud domes in Auroville.

Soldner was a teacher to numerous students who became prominent ceramic artists, including Jun Kaneko. Says A Meadows, one of his assistants, “He would pull together people of a certain type of creativity and create a community of artists. He'd bring in the greatest people in the country, the world really, to work, so you were surrounded by all these artists not to pontificate, but to work. And he'd have his studio right in the classroom. His teaching philosophy was to teach by example: You could sit and watch him figure out his own questions.”

Sometime at the end of the Woodstoke workshop, a huge bronze piece arrived in a truck. It was a casting of an original made in clay at the same venue a year ago, by his friend, Volkous. Somewhere in my backups, I have photos of Paul as a silhouette sitting quietly in front of the Volkous bronze. Now Paul, Peter and Rudy are sitting together up there somewhere, sharing a single malt maybe....

Some rules & regulations

1. The work should be priced below Rs. 5,000 per piece. The entire sale price will be yours and we will not collect a commission on sales.

2. The display will have to be manned by you, as we would like to encourage interaction between makers and buyers. You could however, collaborate with one another for a space.

3. No commercial collaborations are allowed. Displays of any external brand other than your own handmade creations will be strictly prohibited.

4. Overnight storage: we will have a night guard to watch the tables overnight. The work will have to be packed securely by you to make it easier to watch over.

Work is left on the pavement at your own risk. This does not apply for the weekdays in between weekends.

5. You can choose to participate in either one or both the weekends.

Kolkatta's Potters Market 2010

A good idea, it seems, has a life of its own! After two very successful markets in Mumbai, potters in Kolkatta invite potters to set up shop in November.

A Potters’ Market is being arranged by CLAY STORIES at the Sculpture Court and Rabindranath Tagore Gallery, ICCR on Ho Chi Minh Sarani, KOLKATTA on 18^th, 19^th, 20^th and 21^st November 2010, from 11am -7pm.

The venue will be made available on the evening of 17^th November. To facilitate matters, participants are advised to bring their materials on 17^th evening itself. Limited storage facility will be available to all.

There is a participation fee of Rs.2000/- per head.

Each participant will be given a space measuring 5 ft x 5 ft. Two display tables (5ftx3ft) and 2 chairs will be provided for each stall.

All participants will be responsible for setting up, displaying, selling and packing their work. They will be expected to wind up on last day of the market. Clay Stories will not be responsible for any unaccounted pieces left behind.

At the market, participants have to ensure that no work should be priced more than Rs. 5000/- and if anyone chooses to display works above this, then Clay Stories may remove it.

THE TEJESHWAR SINGH MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR 2010 in

SOCIAL SCIENCES, BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT and MEDIA & COMMUNICATION STUDIES

SAGE instituted *THE TEJESHWAR SINGH MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIPS* in 2009 to honour Tejeshwar Singh, Managing Director of SAGE India for 25 years and doyen of the publishing industry in South Asia.

ADDITIONAL FELLOWSHIP IN 2010:

Proposals in the areas of social justice--including individual rights, changing lifestyles and the significance of an expanded educated class would be preferred. Preference will be given to proposals that are interdisciplinary in scope. For the purposes of this award social sciences comprise economics, economic and social history, political science, psychology, sociology and social anthropology.

Rolf Lynton, T N Madan, Surendra Munshi, Bhikhu Parekh, T V Rao, Jagdish Sheth, Arvind Singhal, Sanjay Subrahmanyam and Romila Thapar.

DURATION:
One year with a stipend of Rs 50,000 a month. Rs 50,000 can be claimed for travel during the tenure of the fellowship. There are no restrictions of theme or ideology but the work must contribute to an understanding or an advancement of the subject in South Asia.

The principal brief to the fellows is to author a book on their chosen subject of research at the end of the fellowship. The book may be published by the scholar's choice of publisher with due acknowledgement to the Tejeshwar Singh Memorial Fellowships for supporting the research.

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to nationals of South Asian ( AARC) countries, including those currently resident overseas. Candidates must be below 40 years of age on 1 April 2010.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Applicants are invited to submit their curriculum vitae, a research proposal and a 5000 word sample of their writing.

The last date for receipt of applications is 31 March 2010.

AWARD OF FELLOWSHIP:
The applications for each fellowship will be vetted by a jury of four experts including one representative of SAGE. The award of the fellowships will be announced in June 2010.

An exhibition of work by the students of the Sanskriti Delhi Blue Ceramics Centre opens on January 15, 2010 at the Sanskriti Kendra, Anandgram near Delhi. The Centre is run as a collaboration between the Delhi Blue Pottery Trus t and the Sanskriti Foundation.

A presentation by Diane Kempler, a ceramist from the US who teaches at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia will precede the opening.

I was googling this evening and found this video clip on You Tube and decided to point you in its direction. According to the site it has been developed by Bill who is a semi retired studio potter from Rochester, New York. He says he has been a potter for 30 years and has a pottery and gallery called New Earth Clay Pottery and Art Gallery. It seems like a simple construction and I wish I had seen this video before I launched off into getting a steel slab roller fabricated by a local welder and machine maker in Alibag.

A travelling exhibition of a 1001 Cups made by ceramicists from around the world has been on show at the Crafts Museum in Delhi and will travel over the next year to China, Korea, Switzerland and France. Curated by Swiss ceramist Claude Presset, the exhibition includes work by Indian potters Aarti Vir, Ira Chaudhuri, Jayanti Nak, Kristine Michael, Lekha Bhagat, Saraben Kumbhar, Shampa Shah and Pandurangiah Daroz among others. Some of the well known international ceramists include Ann Roberts from Canada, Caroline Cheng from China, Janet Mansfield from Australia and Ryoji Koie from Japan

The exhibition is intended to pay tribute to the teacup from India and aims to demonstrate the rich diversity in present day ceramics practice. The exhibition is supported by Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council.

WHY A STUDIO POTTERS’ MARKET?

Out on the street in a festival atmosphere, makers and buyers meet. Potters and ceramists sell their work to a receptive audience and chat with them in an informal atmosphere. Potters meet their peers, establishing connections and creating a community amongst potters from across India and abroad. New potters in the circuit are introduced to others, we see each other’s work and we make sure people from the public know what we as studio potters do; we educate and involve them with the medium through workshops and demonstrations . Specialist workshops and slide lectures introduce our work to our contemporaries.

WHEN IS THIS?

The Market will be set up on the two weekends of the festival: 6^th-7^th, 13^th & 14^th FEB, 2010.

It is up to you to choose whether you would like to be there for one or both weekends.

The Market format will be informal, unlike an art gallery exhibition and we hope it will allow studio potters to reach a wider audience.

We plan to have workshops, demonstrations and talks on the weekdays of the festival. Anyone who would like to demonstrate at the Market, please feel free to contact us now with your proposals and suggestions!

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

This market is ONLY for Studio Potters: those who largely make their own pieces and NOT for those who engage a commercial setup to make their work.

WHERE ARE WE SHOWING?

We offer a Haatgaadi (fruit vendors cart) or equivalent in the main parking lot in the Kala Ghoda Area. You will be expected to display your own work and will have to procure the stands for display. We will provide contacts for the carts and possibly be making a bulk deal for everyone. A uniform format is what we are aiming at (this will be confirmed according to the deals and options); else, you are most welcome to bring your own tables and carts of the same size as others.

PARTICIPATION FEE

The entire sale price will be yours and we will not collect anything apart form a participation amount of Rs 1000/- which will go partly towards the cost of an overnight watchman, the printing of banners/publicity/posters, a donation to the Kala Ghoda Association and chai pani costs!

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES

Please send in images of your work and a resume. Replies to come in by 20^th Nov,2009.

Participation will be on first come first basis and confirmed once we have reviewed your work.

Please send us your contact details and state if you will be present for one or both weekends.

Payment to be made after confirmation from us.

Some Rules & Regulations (we have had to create some to avoid disasters!)

1. The work should not be priced not more than Rs. 2,500 per item.

2. The display will have to be manned by YOU ONLY, as we would like to encourage interaction between makers and buyers. You could however, collaborate with one another for a space.

3. NO COMMERCIAL COLLABORATIONS are allowed. Displays of any external brand other than your own handmade creations will be strictly prohibited.

4. Overnight Storage: We will have a night guard to man the carts overnight. This does not apply for the weekdays in between. There is no other storage space available. You are welcome to look for own storage space if you choose not to keep your work at the venue.

PLZ. NOTE: We are essentially facilitating a space and have set into motion a process which is developing into an annual event. We will gladly share our knowledge of available resources in the city; for instance, sources of crates, umbrellas, shamianas, etc. but will not be responsible for anything else apart from allocation of space at the venue.

An Exhibition of Ceramics and Paintings by Auroville based Adil Writer opens at the Visual Arts Gallery, at the India Habitat Centre on October 25th, 2009 and runs through till October 31, 2009. A number of artist talks and demonstrations run concurrently with this exhibition, presented by the Delhi Blue Pottery Trust.

Colour, cacophony, teeming life, jostling humans, buildings and traffic, all set against the swelter of a few thousand years of history. It is life in India, a vibrant visual and sensory overload, a tumult that can exhilarate or confound, that Adil Writer expresses with joyous abandon in his paintings. Adil’s busy surfaces seem to be a perfect reflection of the day to day clamor of life here. Equally intriguing is the less obvious aspect; the search for the inner core of peace that holds one stable in the midst of chaos.

Adil’s spontaneous approach revels in both the chaos and the search. Paint and texture swirl with motion and energy and overlay the anchor of a photographic image. He combines photography with an interpretation of the moment and the outcome is a series of paintings that takes the ordinary and transmutes it into a half-seen otherness. An adept at moving between mediums, he says that he “consciously handles the painted surfaces, the texture and crackles, to take them beyond paint, and closer to ceramics.” His work regardless of medium has a ring of truth, for it could be a description of the man himself. Adil’s irrepressible and generous spirit imbues all of his art and takes the viewer along on a tour of Adil’s special world.

An exhibition in book format curated by Maria Elena Buszek, professor of Art History at the Kansas City Art Institute, opens in Chicago on July 31, 2009.

The only Indian artist represented among the 24 women artists, working in different media is Mumbai based ceramicst Anjani Khanna. Other artists include Barbara Ciurej and Grazyna Adamska-Jarecka, Adriana Baltazar, Kathleen Eliot, Rebecca Greene, Crisanta de Guzman, Judithe Herandez, Margaret LeJeune, Aliza Lelah, Suyeon, Bonnie Peterson, Shari Pettis, Tara Polansky, Melissa Shook, Alice Simpson, Sylvia Steen, Verna Todd, Kate True, Iris Vazquez, Amy Wainwright, Angilee Wilkerson, Beatrice Wolert, and Elizabeth Wuerffel.

Her Mark 2010, is a publication with art and poetry by 48 women. While Juror Maria Elena Buszek made the art selections, Seaton juried the poetry entries. Designed by Karin Kuzniar and edited by Marty Bash Her Mark 2010 includes a layout with color reproductions, poetry, weekly calendar pages with holidays and moon cycles.

In addition to the publication Woman Made Gallery will host an exhibition featuring most of the Her Mark 2010 artworks. The Artist Reception is on July 31st from 6 to 9 p.m. The Release Party and Reading is on August 2 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Madhvi Subrahmanian visits the exhibition 'Afterlife of Tang Nobility: An insight to an important part of the Chinese culture during the 7th-9th centuries' at Alliance Francaise de Singapour.

An “afterlife” exists. If not for everyone, surely for tomb sculptures that enjoy their time in the limelight years after they were created. Buried with the nobility more than 2000 years ago, tomb sculptures from Tang Dynasty, China have been collected for centuries, resting in some of the leading museums and private collections around the world today.They tell us the story of their times.

A selection from a Singapore private collection - The Bryan Collection, is currently on display at the Alliance Francaise in Singapore in the show titled "Afterlife of Tang Nobility: An insight to an important part of the Chinese Culture during the 7th-9th centuries."

The story of the tomb sculptures of the Tang dynasty begins around 200 BCE when the world was equally dominated by Roman Empire in the west and the Qin and Han dynasties in the east. Influenced by Confucius’ philosophy a change in the burial customs took place around the Qin Dynasty. It was no longer necessary to bury horses or wives alive in tombs with their aristocratic masters. It was decreed that a symbolic sacrifice would suffice. This is when the tradition of burying ceramic ware with the deceased was born.

By the 5th century, Europe had entered the dark ages and in China, the mighty Tang Dynasty was taking shape. From the 7th to 9th Century the Tang dynasty was one of the world’s foremost civilizations. Economic prowess and military strength of the dynasty brought centralized administration over a large geography and nearly 300 years of peace. This period also made great technological advances and opened up to new artistic influences.

A prominent Tang Dynasty hybrid creature with a human face that once guarded the tombs of the nobles leads you into the show. The collection has an impressive grouping of ceramic horses and camels. For the Tang people these animals were indispensable and loyal companions as they conquered and traded along the silk route - their status on the silk route was second only to silk.

The sancai glaze-tricolor that is synonymous with Tang Dynasty ceramics was a major breakthrough in ceramic technology that brought color and longevity to earthenware ceramics. The lead based glazes mainly yellow, brown and green run down and mingle on the ceramic ware.

The female figures in the collection point towards a liberal and elevated social status of women during the prosperous period of the Tang Dynasty. The ceramic figures inform us that Tang aristocratic women were not only fashionable but also strong and outgoing. They rode large horses and dressed in skin-baring clothes. A variety of other objects and figures in ceramics such as military officials, court jesters, bearded foreigners, ritual objects, and utilitarian vessels are part of the Bryan collection.

Were it not for the fact that people in the Tang Dynasty believed in the afterlife, and buried objects with their dead, we would not know the joys of “afterlife”.

The Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI) announces the second cycle of its Research Fellowship Programme for 2009 to provide young scholars, researchers and independent practitioners the opportunity to do research on contemporary urban issues and concerns of Mumbai. This programme is supported by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) grant.

Research Fellows shall be given a monthly stipend/ professional allowance and provided with working space and requisite infrastructure at the UDRI studio. In addition UDRI will facilitate discussions with relevant resource persons in the field and assist in the publication of research findings. Support will also be available to the fellows for post-research advocacy.

The research period can vary between 6 to18 months. Applicants shall demonstrate the relevance of the proposed research to the city of Mumbai/Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the feasibility of accompanying the research goal within the stipulated period.

Renowned Ceramic Scholar and Educator, Susan Harnly Peterson passes away

Susan Harnly Peterson, ceramic artist, writer and professor passed away at home in Scottsdale, Ariz., on March 26, 2009 after a long illness. She was surrounded by her family and friends. She was 83 years old.

Peterson graduated from Mills College in Oakland, Calif. in 1946 and went to the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University to complete her MFA in Ceramics. She met and married her husband, Jack L. Peterson, while there.

She began teaching ceramics first in 1952, and spent 23 years at the University of Southern California. From 1956 -1985, Peterson taught at Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts (ISOMATA) each summer. She continued her life as an educator at Hunter College in New York City, retiring from teaching in 1994.

Peterson traveled extensively and became an advocate for ceramic arts worldwide. She did workshops and gave lectures in countries as diverse as Japan, Australia, India, China, Sweden, England and throughout the U.S., where she brought well known international ceramic artists to work and teach. During her career she also helped establish many programs to assist artists including ceramic departments at Chouinard, USC, Hunter and ISOMATA.

Peterson's writing career began in 1974 with a monograph on the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada; her book on artist Maria Martinez was the best selling art book of 1978 and won a Cowboy Hall of Fame award. She was in the process of completing the 5th edition of Craft and Art of Clay, originally published in 1990, at the time of her death.

Peterson received many awards throughout her career including the Knight of Order of the Lion of Finland (1969), a Fellow of the American Craft Council (1983), the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Lifetime Achievement Award (1996) and the College of Fine Arts of Arizona State University's Distinguished Achievement Award (1999).

The Arizona State University Art Museum Ceramics Research Center dedicated the Susan Harnly Peterson Ceramic Research Archive in 2002 where much of her expansive personal collection of books, slides, notes and pottery is available to study. A memorial service is planned for May 9th at Arizona State University-Tempe Campus.

She is survived by her children Jill Hoddick, Jan Peterson and Taag Peterson, and seven grandchildren.

Maati is a week-long feast of ceramics, with an almost endless array of more than a thousand art pieces; demonstrations by renowned artists every morning, and talks and slide shows every evening.

The festival focusses on terracotta - a material that has had a long tradition the world over, but these traditions are slowly dying out. Maati is an attempt to revive and showcase the tradition, and to highlight how this clay can be used not only for utilitarian ware, but also as a medium of expression in the most contemporary sense. More than a hundred ceramists from India and abroad will explore the limits of this versatile medium. The exhibition and associated events is organised by the Delhi Blue Pottery Trust and the Sanskriti Kendra.

Primula Pandit - Woodfired Ceramics

Years ago, when I was not more than 6 or 7, the then Prince of Wales Museum would organise classes for children during the languid summer months at the children's creative centre, in its grounds. There I met Mrs Primula Pandit. I remember making a small pot on the potter's wheel with a traditional potter who had been invited by her. Thereafter I would go to her studio and mess about with clay. As a a teenager I returned. I would walk down to her studio, in the leafy environs of the Silver Oaks Estate in Bombay, and work with her. I remember loading her kiln, spraying her work with glaze, using a noisy old compressor and having lunch many an afternoon at her home in Mumbai. I have vague recollections of her experiences in Eastern Europe, of her involvement with Development Alternatives and when I look back, much of it influenced me and my choices at the time.

Mrs Pandit has been working with clay for over 50 years. She says "Clay is earth, earth is ground, and ground is firmness beyond time and conditioning. And clay is guru, clay is yoga, which unleashes the creative spirit. Thus each of us is a creator, a prajapati, in touch with the grace that clay bestows." She says the potter's hands move away from the egocentric activity of the artist and makes for us the ecological balances man needs in his environment and psyche, creating order and laughter within and a sharing without.

An exhibition of her recent work in wood fired ceramics, made primarily at the the Sanskriti Kendra in New Delhi was on view at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. She has also used smoke firing techniques to create dramatic graphic patterns on rounded organic forms. Mrs Pandit has also drawn on the contemporary traditions of the Kumaon hills and surrounding areas to create wall pieces. Some combine ritual clay objects with metal work used on trucks and others use floor patterns hill women paint in their homes. The exhibition also included paintings which capture the colours of the Kumaon hills, where she spends much of her time.

Mrs Pandit's foundation in ceramics was laid at Sardar Gurucharan Singh's studios in Delhi, and with Bernard Leach at St Ives in the UK. She has travelled widely and worked with numerous potters and ceramic artists in different parts of the world.
